Okay, let me just point out that Vampirella has the worst costume ever.
THE
WORST.Normally, most impractical/oversexualized female costumes, I can think of at least a few situations where it makes sense, just not in battle.
This? This wouldn’t even be useful as a swimsuit. It doesn’t even look like you could sit in it, and as far as I’m concerned, this has crossed some kind of event horizon where it’s not even titillating, it’s just awkward.
Lets talk about Vampi’s costume. It was designed by Trina Robbins. An important trailblazing comic artists. I highly doubt she would have been involved in designing an outfit just for cash or because she felt it was exploitative.
Lets also point out Vampirella was never designed initially as a hero. In fact, far form it. She was penned as a Horror hostess. A less dressed alien Vampira.
Created by Forrest J. Ackerman-the godfather of cosplay by the way. An important figure in sci-fi/fantasy.
The original stories, when they gave her a story, were written by Archie Goodwin and skillfully drawn by Jose Gonzales. Look at the old school stuff-yeah, the outfit is impractical but Gonzales never goes exploitative in his work.
I’m willing to accept that she’s a good character- anyone who pays into the idea that impractical costume = useless character is epic-failing the very feminism they claim to represent. I like what I’ve read about her, and considering how often Anne Rice’s male characters get the credit for being the first modern-age sympathetic vampires I think it’s a shame that people forget that Vampirella was doing the heroic-vampire thing first when she does it a lot more heroically than them anyway. I just don’t see how anyone could do much in this costume, that’s all.
I understand impractical-but its also such a striking design. Its become so important to her that its hard to imagine her in anything else. Vampirella has been one of the first characters to be cosplayed as(thanks to her creator hiring models) and if you look around art sites, especially with pro artists, you find just how popular her design ahs made her.
Her design is what made people look for her.
Especially in American comics at the time.
BTW-I want to point out to my followers the arts by Paul Abrams.
